Event Title: Six Degrees Society NYC Presents Starting Your Own Business to Brain Tumors: What Happens When You Come Up Against a Setback With Katie Schloss & Polly Rodriguez
Katie Schloss was unstoppable. Launching her first business at 25-years-old, an accessory brand worn by celebrities from Allison Williams to Jennifer Lawrence and written up everywhere from InStyle to New York Magazine, Katie successfully licensed her business to A.JAFFE, a top bridal brand--and then Katie's world was flipped upside down. On November 17, 2017, Katie found out that she had a 3" brain tumor. With two months left to live on the day of her surgery and grateful for this second shot at life, Katie now explores themes from resilience and determination to creativity and the trust it takes to lose yourself completely in order to find yourself anew in this inspirational fireside chat.
Polly Rodriguez is the CEO and Co-Founder of Unbound, a rebellious sexual wellness company for women. Polly went through a cancer diagnosis at 21 that resulted in early onset menopause and found herself shopping for a vibrator at a seedy shop next to the highway in St. Louis, Missouri. Ten years later, she started Unbound with the goal of taking vibrators, lubricants and sexual accessories mainstream through elevated design, body-safe materials, and accessible pricing. Today, the company has been hailed by the New York Times as the "ideological center of the tech-savvy, female-led women's sexuality movement" with over 75 products created by a team of 10 women in New York City.

About Katie Schloss:
Graduating from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2010, Katie Schloss worked for LaForce + Stevens, a prominent PR agency in New York City. Originally a side-business, Katie launched Three Jane, a personalized accessory brand, and the Map Necklace out of her downtown apartment in 2012. The Map Necklace was (and still is) a piece of customized jewelry, commemorating life's most important moments and places, and after being featured in the window of Henri Bendel on 5th Avenue, Katie was offered a licensing deal with A.JAFFE, a well-respected bridal brand. Working for her licensee for a year and growing sales by almost 5000%, she began consulting for Brenne Whisky, a French single malt produced and bottled out of Cognac, France, seeing the company through acquisition in 2017. Being accepted to and attending the highly selective Iowa Writers’ Workshop in the summer of 2018, Katie is writing her first book, a medical memoir called Brainstorm.
